q2-itsxpress “Fatal error: File too small”

We have an app running on cyverse thanks to Reetu.
There is a problem running qiime itsxpress however that I reported here

for single- end reads, vsearch throws an error "Fatal error: File too small"

extract ITS2 seqs - this fails

!qiime itsxpress trim-single
--i-per-sample-sequences bastrop-sx2-outputs/sx2.demux.qza
--p-region ITS2
--p-taxa F
--o-trimmed bastrop-sx2-outputs/sx2.demux.ITS2.qza
