Need help in OTU picking step in QIIME1. I am doing OTU picking against reference database 'UNITE'. This command keeps running for hours on my system (8GB RAM; 64-bit OS). But then my sytem run into problem. Kindly suggest solution.

Welcome to the forum!
First, just wanted to point out that QIIME 1 is no longer officially supported as it has been replaced with QIIME 2 and we strongly recommend you make the transition to QIIME 2. In addition to all off the huge improvements with the new version, you’ll also be able to recruit more support for issues such as this so there’s always that extra incentive.
That being said, it sounds like you are just running out of memory. Depending on your dataset, 8GB may simply not be enough memory, so I would recommend finding a more powerful machine with more RAM to run this on.
