Help to speed the analyses up

Hello there,
Thanks for the effort you put in this forum.
I am facing some issue with very time-consuming scripts and I really need to speed the analyses up.
I am now using macqiime on a Mac computer OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 (1,6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB DDR3 a 1867 MHz) and the pick_otus.py is taking weeks.

I was thinking to purchase an EC2 AWS instance.
Do you think it would be a good way to speed the running time up?
Which type of instance would you suggest to choose?

Would you suggest any other way to faster the process?

Thank you very much for your kind attention and your help.

Best regards,
Chiara

If you’re de novo picking there isn’t really a way to speed it up, running it on a machine with a faster single core will speed it up considerably as 1.6GHz is rather slow.

If you have a good reference database you could try reference clustering which can be multi-threaded.
