Hi, I wanted to perform a microbiome data analysis using QIIME 2. I am performing my analysis on the dataset already given in articles. How can I create a sample metadata file for my dataset without the knowledge about the information compiled at the time of sample collection.
What are necessary information that are required during sample metadata file creation.

Unless this is simulated data, you need to get the original data. I would look at the articles and see if you can locate the metadata (its sometimes a supplementary table or deposited in the repository) or contact the original authors.
Presumably you have a hypothesis you want to test in your analysis? Your metadata should address that hypothesis and the potential confounding variables (things you think will complicate that relationship.) Personally, I tend to look for both biological and processing variables.
