ASV naming convention and replicability

Dear Qiimers,

This is just to make sure I understand how the ASV naming works in principle: ASV names are assigned based on the hash code of the sequence.

  1. This means that if I have two identical sequences in two independent studies with two independent Qiime2 iterations, the identical sequences will have the same name. Is this correct?

  2. Is this also consistent between DADA2 and Deblur?

Hi @mstagliamonte,
You are correct on both accounts. Both use md5 hashing so identical strings will always have the same hash.
