The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Branch (BBB) in the Division of Intramural Population Health Research (DIPHR) of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) (https://www.n)ichd.nih.gov/about/org/diphr/officebranch/bbb)) invites candidates to apply for tenure-track investigator positions to establish independent research programs in modern areas of computational statistics and data science. The branch is expected to make multiple hires over the next couple of years. Areas of interest for the branch include causal inference, statistical learning, analysis of high dimensional data, integration of large databases, unsupervised learning methods, and the analysis of microbiome, metabolomics, genetics, and other ‘omics’ data.
The mission of BBB is to develop novel statistical and computational methodologies motivated by the NICHD’s Strategic Plan (https://www.n)ichd.nih.gov/sites/default/files/2019)-09/NICHD_Strategic_Plan.pdf) )and by the Division’s population health research that spans human fecundity and fertility, pregnancy, child and adolescent development, health disparities, and health-related behaviors. This includes developing and implementing methods that support original research seeking to address critical data gaps, analyzing large heterogeneous databases, and disseminating statistical and computational methodologies. Current areas represented in the branch include analysis of time-to-event data, biomarker data, constrained statistical inference, longitudinal and correlated data, and methods for microbiome and other genomic data.
The branch is seeking to broaden its expertise in modern areas of high dimensional analysis of data arising from studies of the microbiome, high density spatial/temporal data arising from continuous monitoring devices (e.g., actigraphs and accelerometers) and imaging (e.g., fMRI and 3D ultrasound), modeling longitudinal complex high dimensional nonlinear systems (e.g., lipidomics, epi-genetics) and their relations to health outcomes, and causal inference in the context of high dimensional data. With the current pandemic, researchers in the Division and Institute are actively engaged in research related to COVID-19. New hires will have an opportunity to play a significant role in the design and analyses of studies related to COVID-19.
Branch scientists are actively engaged in inter-disciplinary collaborations with researchers within DIPHR as well as with scientists in the NICHD’s basic and clinical Division of Intramural Research, faculty throughout the NIH Intramural Research Program, and researchers outside NIH. The BBB mission highlights mentoring the next
generation of leaders in the fields of biostatistics, bioinformatics and computational statistics.

Resources for tenure track investigators within the branch include full salary support as well as funding for trainees. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics, or related fields. Excellent communication skills with keen interest in biomedical applications are required.
