Job Description

The Pathogen and Microbiome Institute (PMI) at Northern Arizona University seeks a Research Technician to perform basic and applied research. The top candidates for this position should have experience with molecular genetic analyses, including DNA isolation, qPCR assay design, data interpretation and troubleshooting, DNA sequencing, genotyping with fluorescent DNA fragment analysis, managing large databases, and the ability to work under BSL2 conditions. There is a possibility of future work in the PMI BSL3 laboratory that would involve handling Select Agent bacterial pathogens such as Burkholderia pseudomallai, Yersinia pestis, and Francisella tularensis.

Primary duties will include:

PCR assay development and validation

DNA extractions

Conducting PCR, agarose gels, real-time PCRs

Library preparation for next generation sequencing, including preparing amplicon sequencing libraries for the MiSeq platform

Organizing and assisting with media and reagent prep

Conducting microbiology techniques under biosafety level 2 conditions, with the possibility of future work implementing BSL3 conditions.

Occasional field work, which may require travel out of town for multiple weeks per year

Managing large databases

Working both independently and in a team-based environment

Assist with management of undergraduate students

Laboratory management and maintenance of shared reagent stocks

Working safely with potentially hazardous materials, such as laboratory chemicals and disease-causing organisms

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR,

Four years lab research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR,

Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and techniques used in molecular genetic analysis

Ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials

Candidate must be well-organized, with an eye for detail

Skills with analyzing and evaluating scientific data

Ability to work successfully within a large laboratory group

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

Ability to work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds
