ECC RAM vs non-ECC RAM for QIIME?

Does QIIME require/recommend ECC RAM for analysis? Or does it matter?

Thanks,
Andor

Hey @Andor_Kiss,

I would say no, unless you are regularly running jobs that take longer than a day. Service uptime is where ECC ram really shines, which is why you really only see it in webservice and HPC systems.

ECC ram also becomes useful if the amount of ram storage starts looking comparable to a harddrive, since at that point, errors become pretty likely.

Hmm, okay - I was thinking more along the lines of floating point calculations (i.e. statistical estimations of relatedness, etc). Generally, we (I) always use ECC RAM machines for all bioinformatics/phylogenetic calculations/modelling; however, I did not see that as a requirement for QIIME, so I was wondering, given the large user-base whether or not that was a relevant concern/issue.
