What is the most convenient way, starting with the artifact demux-paired-end.qza produced by qiime tools import, of listing the sample IDs included in this file? The output should be a text file, or even better a “dummy” sample metadata file that would make it easy to fill in sample metadata.
Try qiime demux summarize. The resulting visualization will contain a list of sample IDs and their read counts. You can download as a CSV and use that as a starting point for making a metadata file (change the header, use TSV format instead).

You can use qiime tools export and find the CSV in the output directory.
